ගලේ කොටුව බැන්දයි තිරිකුණාමලේ…

ත්‍රිකුණාමල නගරයේ ඇති මනරම්ම ස්ථානයක් ලෙස ත්‍රිකුණාමල කොටුව හඳුන්වා දිය හැක. නගරයේ එක් කෙළවරෙක මුහුද හා මයිම්ව ඇති ගල් පරුවතයක ප්‍රතාපවත්ව නැගී සිටින්නා වූ මෙම ෆ්‍රෙඩ්රික් කොටුව 1623දී පෘතුගීසි ජාතිකයන් විසින් ඉදිකරන ලදි. ලන්දේසීන්, ඉංග්‍රීසීන් මෙන්ම ප්‍රංශ ජාතිකයන්ද පසුකාලීනව කොටුව අත්පත් කරගෙන සිට ඇත. කොටුවේ පුරාවෘත්තය රැගත් බෝඩ් ලෑල්ලක් කොටුවට ඇතුළු වනවාත් සමගම වම් අත පැත්තේ පවුරේ එල්වා ඇත. එය කියවන්නට අමතක නොකරන්න. 17වන සහ 20වන ශතවර්ෂ අතර කාල පරාසයේදී ත්‍රිකුණාමල කොටුව යුද ගැටුම් වල ඉදිරි වළල්ලක්ව පැවතී ඇත. කොටුවේ අයිතිය හමුදාවකට එකල පටන්ම මහත් අස්වැසිල්ලක්ව තිබුනු බව පැහැදිලිය. ශ්‍රී ලංකා යුද හමුදාවේ ගජබා රෙජිමේන්තුවේ කඳවුරක් ලෙස කොටුවේ කොටසක් අදටත් යොදා ගැනෙන අතරම දිස්ත්‍රික් ලේකම් කාර්යාලය, අතිරේක මැතිවරණ කොමසාරිස් කාර්යාලය යනාදී රජයේ වැදගත් ගොඩනැගිලි රාශියක් කොටු පවුර තුල කේන්ද්‍රගතව පවතී. කොටුව අභ්‍යන්තරයේ ආරක්ෂක අංශ විසින් පවත්වාගෙන යන පන්සලක් ඇත. මෙය ක්‍රි.ව.3වන සියවසේදී මහසෙන් රජතුමා විසින් දේවාලයක් කඩා දමා එතැන ඉදි කළ, පසුව පෘතුගීසී ආක්‍රමණිකයන් විනාශ කර දැමූ, ගෝකණ්ණ රජමහා විහාරය නමින් පවත්වාගෙන යනු ලැබේ. එහි උසැති හිටි පිළිමවහන්සේ නමකි. මෙම පිළිමය පාමුල සිට ත්‍රිකුණාමල නගරය ඇතුළු අවට පරිසරය දර්ශනීයව දැකගත හැකිය. සුප්‍රසිද්ධ හින්දු දෙවොලක් වන තිරුකෝණේස්වරම්  දේවාලයත්, ලවර්ස් ලීප් නම් මහා ප්‍රපාතයත් පිහිටියේද කොටුව ඇතුලතය. කොටුව තුල තුරු ගොමු, කඳු ගහන වටපිටාව කොටුවේ සුන්දරත්වය වඩ වඩාත් තීව්‍ර කරයි. ත්‍රිකුණාමල කොටු පවුර තුල සැලකිය යුතු මුවන් ප්‍රජාවක් කල් ගෙවන අතර උන් බෙහෙවින්ම හීලෑය. කෙසේ නමුත් කොටු පවුර තුලත් නගරය ආශ්‍රිතවත් තැන තැන පොලිතින් නොදමා නිසි තැන්වල බහාලන ලෙස අප ඉල්ලා සිටින්නේ පොලිතින් භක්ෂණය මුවන්ට මරණය කැඳවන බැවිනි.

පිවිසෙන හැටි…
ත්‍රිකුණාමල නගරයේ ඕනෑම කෙනෙකු දන්නා අඳුනන ස්ථානයක් නියාවෙන් සොයා ගැනීම ඉතාමත්ම පහසුය. සුප්‍රකට ත්‍රිකුණාමල ඔරලෝසු කණුවේ සිට නව බස් නැවතුම්පලත්, මාළු වෙළෙඳපොලත් අතරින් දිවෙන කෝනේසර් පාරේ මීටර 500ක් පමණ ගිය කළ මුහුද නෙත ගැටෙන තැන තෙමං හන්දියකි. හන්දියෙන් වම් අත පැත්තට ඇති මාරගයේ මීටර 100ක් පමණ ගිය කළ කොටුවට ඇතුළු විය හැකිය. කොටුව තුලට ඇතුළු විය හැක්කේ සැහැල්ලු වාහන වලට පමණි. බර වාහන මැකේසර් ක්‍රීඩාංගනය ආශ්‍රිත පිට්ටනයේ ගාල් කළ යුතුය. කෙසේ වෙතත් මෝටර් රථයේ කොටුවට ඇතුළු වනවාට වඩා පයින් යෑම ස්වභාව රසස්වාදයට රුකුල් දෙයි. කස ගස් පෙළකින් සිසිල සදන මේ මාර්ගයේ දකුණු පස මනරම් මුහුදු තීරය නෙත පිනවයි. මාර්ගයේ වම් පසින් පැරණි කාලතුවක්කු කිහිපයක් තේජාන්විතව ඕලන්ද බොක්ක දෙසට මානයි. ඔරලෝසු කණුවත් කොටුවත් අතර ප්‍රදේශයේ තිත් මුවන් ගැවසෙන නිසා යන එන විටදී ඒ ගැනත් සැලකිලිමත් වන්න.

අවට ආකර්ෂණයන්…
පෙර කීවක් මෙන් සුප්‍රසිද්ධ තිරුකෝනේස්වරම් දෙවොලත්, ලවර්ස් ලීප් ප්‍රපාතයත් ත්‍රිකුණාමල කොටුව තුල පිහිටා ඇත. කොටුවට පෙනෙන මානයේම ත්‍රිකුණාමල වෙරළ තීරය දැකිය හැක. මෙම වෙරළ සුදුවන් වැල්ලෙන් සහ අලංකෘත නීල වර්ණ කරදියෙන් හෙබි සොඳුරු ස්ථානයකි. ත්‍රිකුණාමලය නගරය නෙක බඩු බාහිරාදියෙන් හෙබ් නගරයකි, එහි ප්‍රධාන වීදි සියල්ලම කොටු පවුරේ සිට පෙනෙන දුරින් පිහිටා ඇති අතර නැවුම් මාළු ඇති මාළු වෙළඳපොලද පෙනෙන මානයේය. තවත් ඓතිහාසික කෝවිල් දෙකක් ත්‍රිකුණාමල නගර මධ්‍යයේ පිහිටා ඇත. එකිනෙක මායිම්ව පිහිටා ඇති මෙම කෝවිල් දෙක පුල්ලෙයාර් කෝවිල සහ කාලි කෝවිල නමින් හැඳින්වේ.

පහසුකම්…
ත්‍රිකුණාමල නගරය ආශ්‍රිතව නවාතැන්පොලවල් සොයා ගැනීම පහසුය. කන්තලේ සිට ත්‍රිකුණාමලය දක්වා ඇදෙනවිට ආන්දන්කුලම ප්‍රදේශයේ සිට නිවාස රැසකම නවාතැන් පහසුකම් ඇත යනුවෙන් බෝඩ් එල්ලා ඇත. මේවා දෛනික පදනමින් කුලියට ගත හැක. අප වරක් නතරවූ ත්‍රිකුණාමල අනුරාධපුර මාර්ගයේ නිවස්නය ඉතා අගනා නවාතැනක් විය. කොළඹ ත්‍රිකුණාමල මාර්ගයේ ත්‍රිකුණාමලයට මදක් මත්තෙන් පිහිටි හොටෙල් ඔෂීන් ආදි හෝටල් රැසක්ද, විශ්‍රාම ශාලා කීපයක්ද සොයා ගත හැකිය. ඉන් එක් විශ්‍රාම ශාලාවක් ත්‍රිකුණාමල කොටුවට යාබදව පිහිටා ඇත. ත්‍රිකුණාමල නගරයේ සිට කි.මි.13ක් දුරින් වූ වෙල්ගම් විහාරයේ නොමිලේ නැවතීමට විශ්‍රාම ශාලවක් ඇති බවත් මට සැලවිය. නගරය පුරාවටම ඉන්ධනහල් කීපයක්ම දැකිය හැක.

A glimpse of the Dutch Bay from the route to Fort Frederick...

This is one of the stunning places in the town of Trincomalee. Located on an edge of the city on top of a massive boulder, the fort was built by the Portuguese in 1623. The Dutch, English and even the French have held custody of this fortress over the years. There’s a board containing the historic information of the fort that is hung at its entrance. Don’t forget to read that before you enter the fort. Between the 17th and 20th centuries Fort Frederick has been a front of many wars. Possession of this invaluable fortress has been of utmost value to its possesor. Even today part of the fort is used by Sri Lanka Army Gajaba Regiment for its activities. Besides that the District Secretariat, Additional Election’s Commissioners Office and other prominent government institutions are located within the boundaries of the fort. A temple which contains a tall statue of Lord Buddha is being maintained inside the fort by the armed forces. One could get a breathtaking view of Trincomalee and its surrounding from the foot of this statue. This temple is maintained under the name Gokanna Rajamaha Vihara, a temple which was originally built by King Mahasen in the 3rd century A.D. by razing a Kovil, later the temple was destroyed by the Portuguese invaders. The infamous Thirukoneswaram Hindu Temple and the precipice called Lover’s Leap is located within the fort as well. The environment consisting of trees, flowers and mountains within the fort further enhances its beauty. There’s a considerable population of Deer within the fort who are quite tame. We kindly urge you to dispose your polythenes appropriately since the consumption of polythene and plastics would be deadly to the Deer population.

How to get there…

It’s quite easy to locate the fort since its a very well known place for those who live in the city. Take the Konesar road that flows in between the Trincomalee new bus stand and the Fish market from the infamous Clock tower. Travel about 500m until you meet the sea, there will be a T junction. Take the left turn and travel 100m to meet the entrance to Fort Frederick. Only light vehicles are allowed to enter into the fortress, heavy vehicles are supposed to be parked in the esplanade beside the McKeyzer stadium. But it is recommended to proceed to the fort on foot if you are to enjoy the beauty of nature. The road that leads up to the entrance of the fort is covered by some shady trees, on the right bank there is a breathtaking view of the ocean while several ancient cannons proudly guards the Dutch bay on the left bank of the road. Be mindful of the fact that there maybe Deer roaming in between the Clock tower and the fort.

Nearby attraction…

As mentioned afore the infamous Thirukoneswaram Hindu Temple and Lover’s Leap are located within the fort premises. You will see the Trincomalee beach with its white sands and clear blue waters magnificently shining nearby. Trincomalee town is full of various accessories for shopping and all the major commercial streets are located walking distance from the fort. The Fish market which yields fresh fish is also located near the fort. Two other historic Kovils (Hindu Temples) are located in the heart of the city, these two Kovils (Pulleyar & Kali) are built adjacent to each other.

Facilities…

It’s easy to find accommodation in Trincomalee. On your way from Kantale to Trincomalee, once you pass Andankulam area you will see plenty of boards hung on the road side with the message “Accommodations available”. You can rent them out on a daily basis. The place we once stayed over in the Trincomalee-Anuradhapura road was very good. Like Hotel Oshin, located few miles before Trincomalee town on the A6 road, there are many other hotel facilities available. One can find several Wishrama Shala in Trinco and one such place is located near the fort itself. I have heard that one can get accomodation for free at the Welgam Wehera Wishrama Shala which is  located 13km away from the town. You will see a number of filling stations across the city.
